Creation Spirituality
The Open Circle
is inspired by the Creation Spirituality (CS) philosophy and movement. CS
is an ancient wisdom tradition which has its roots in the beliefs and
practices of worldwide religions and indigenous cultures (such as Native
American and Aboriginal). It was greatly influenced by early
Judeo-Chrisitian perspectives and those of the Medieval mystics (such as
St. Francis of Assisi and
Hildegard of Bingen). Creation Spirituality is not a religion. It is a
spiritual perspective honoring the wisdom of all creation and all people.
It celebrates the whole of creation and the principles of love, honor and
respect found in religious traditions around the globe. Through these
varied and multi-cultural perspectives, it offers a holistic world view and
solid foundation for healthy living and parenting in these challenging
times.
It is sometimes called Creation-Centered Spirituality because of its
great respect for the natural world and the myriad wonders held within it.
The Creation Spirituality perspective focuses upon the interrelatedness and
interconnectedness of the natural world. Creation Spirituality calls for us
to live in non-hierarchical ways honoring the value of all life and all
creation. In this way Creation Spirituality is about recognizing,
celebrating, nurturing, and protecting our relationships with creation,
including our relationships with the planet, its life supporting systems
(waterways, atmosphere, forests, soil), other creatures (such as the leafy,
winged, hoofed, finned, and scaled ones), and our fellow humans. Creation
Spirituality acknowledges that all of creation is sacred and that by living
out of this perspective we can change our world.
Creation Spirituality is about integration. It’s about bringing the
worlds of art, science and mysticism together. It’s about healing the rift
between religion and the sciences. Creation Spirituality acknowledges that
these diverse aspects of creation complement and support one another. It
acknowledges the need to integrate the emerging scientific story of the
universe with our own individual stories and to draw upon the empowerment
that emerges from truly recognizing this profound connection. Creation
Spirituality encourages exploring these connections through story, ritual
and art, thus reimmersing ourselves in the wonders of the universe and the
wonders of child-like creativity.
Creation Spirituality is about rediscovering and reactivating our creative
potential. It's about reawakening the artist within us all and redefining
art to include our daily lives. Creation Spirituality is about taking
responsibility for the co-creative role we play in the universe. It
acknowledges that we are all creative beings and that we all contribute to
the present and the future through each choice we make.
Very importantly, the Creation Spirituality tradition provides people
with the empowerment necessary to act on behalf of creation. It provides
perspectives and values which assist us in taking on the issues necessary
to create a healthy, safer future for our fragile Earth and her equally
fragile children. Creation Spirituality calls us each to help create
justice and balance in our world. It provides support and structure for
personal and social transformation offering solutions to a dysfunctional
paradigm.
Creation Spirituality is more than just a tradition. It is also a
powerful movement uniting people around the world. Practiced in individual
ways, through individual regions, the movement respects diversity and
welcomes differentiation. Creation Spirituality Connectors work
individually and in collaboration with other community networks to help
make positive changes on planet Earth. Together, these varying groups honor
and empower individual and collective celebration, ceremony, creativity,
and activism. They provide resources and support systems for individuals
and communities helping to bring the human species into harmony with the
rest of creation.
The primary modern day articulator of the Creation Spirituality tradition
and movement is author, priest, and theologian Matthew Fox. Fox has written
over 20 books on the topic of Creation Spirituality including his
ground-breaking Original Blessing. Other works include the recent New
Reformation; Creativity: Where the Divine and the Human Meet; One River,
Many Wells; Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh; The Reinvention of
Work; The Coming of the Cosmic Christ and his children's book In The
Beginning There was Joy. He is Founder and President Emeritus of Wisdom
University (formerly known as University
of Creation Spirituality) in Oakland,
California. Matthew Fox devotes his
life to keeping alive the Creation Spirituality tradition and movement. He
makes invaluable contributions to the planet through his writings,
lectures, workshops, and the reinvention of education and worship.
